At Choices For Change we provide a personalized service
that endeavours to meet your needs. People come to us with a range
of problems and life experiences. No two situations are alike. For
this reason, we sit with you one on one to get to know you and help
you to identify what you want to change and how best to go about
it.
We believe that no one willingly develops problems with alcohol
or drug use. We are not here to judge you but to help you get more
of what you want from your life.
Often, people make the decision to come to us after they have experienced
some problems as a result of their use of alcohol or drugs. Alcohol
or drug use can lead to a range of difficulties including the following:
- problems in relationships with family
- problems at work or school
- arguments/loss of friends
- feelings of embarrassment and shame
- feeling stuck in a rut
- legal trouble
- financial problems
- emotional health issues like depression and anxiety
- physical health problems including difficulty sleeping, poor
appetite, high blood pressure, liver dysfunction etc.
We will help you to decide what you could do to improve your readiness
for change, work with you to reduce problems caused by your use
and help you to identify how you can achieve all of your personal
goals.
Low Risk Drinking Guidelines
Low risk drinking can be described as use of alcohol at a level
that does not create any life problems. The Centre for Addiction
and Mental Health, a world renown research facility, suggests a
weekly limit of 14 drinks for men and 9 drinks for women. They also
suggest that to avoid problems it is best to drink no more than
2 standard drinks per day (1 standard drink = 12 oz. of 5% beer,
1.5 oz. of liquor or 5 oz. of 12% wine). If you are taking medication
or have health problems, you may need to set a lower limit. Please
consult your doctor if you are unsure what a safe limit would be
for your health condition.
If you have noticed that over time you need to drink more to get
the same effect, this may be a sign of a growing dependence on alcohol
that could lead to problems.
