What kinds of people use your service?
We see people from all walks of life. From factory workers to people
in retail to professionals to stay at home moms. Because our service
is funded by the Ministry of Health, there are no financial barriers
to receiving service. People who could easily afford private counselling
come to us because of our expertise in helping people with substance
abuse and gambling problems.
How confidential is your service?
Confidentiality is very important to us. We are located on the
top floor of a public building which houses retail businesses as
well as other professional services - so no one will know your reason
for entering the building. We do not share information with family
members or anyone else without your written consent. Our full confidentiality
policy is explained to you when you arrive.
Do I have to stop gambling or using alcohol and drugs?
While some people who come to us have already made this decision,
the choice is up to you. We can help you examine whether stopping
altogether is the best strategy for you or whether reducing your
use may be an option. If you choose to reduce your use, we help
you to set a measurable goal so that you can monitor how you are
doing.
Do I have to believe or say I’m an addict or alcoholic?
No. Many people who have problems with alcohol or drugs are not
addicted. Sometimes the problem is not that severe. Sometimes people
are uncomfortable with the idea of addiction or feel it implies
they cannot make choices. Our staff is more concerned about helping
you make changes than in the label you choose to use for your problem.
Will I have to go in a group?
No. Most people are seen one on one and have little interaction
with others who use our service. We may offer groups from time to
time, but your participation would be voluntary.
Will I have to go away?
Most people are able to make changes by attending community based
counselling. We will help you decide whether a more intensive inpatient
treatment experience is a better option. Most inpatient programs
are fully covered by OHIP but require you to meet admission criteria.
Our staff are familiar with these criteria and with the differences
between programs.
How long will I have to wait to be seen by a counsellor?
We make every effort to meet with new clients within 14 days. We
understand that sometimes it takes a long time and a lot of courage
to make the call, and people are anxious to get started.
What does Choices For Change look like?
We are located in a lovely older building in downtown Stratford.
Our space consists of a reception area and a set of offices. We
are quite proud of our office space and frequently hear positive
comments about how welcoming it is.
If I am attending a self-help group, do I still need your service?
Self-help groups can be a great source of support. Many of our
clients attend AA or NA. An equal number, choose not to attend such
groups. Professional counselling can complement what these groups
offer. We do not make judgements about your decision to attend or
not attend. The choice is up to you.
Please call or e-mail
us if you have other questions about our service.
